A Word of Advice for New Dads: Relax

Scenario #1:

Your 3-week-old starts projectile vomiting for no apparent reason. "She must be allergic to food. Malnutrition and dehydration will set in at any moment," you think to yourself. Panic sets in.

Scenario #2:

A month after giving birth, your wife starts crying uncontrollably and saying things like, "This baby shouldn't be here. I'm not fit to be a mother," and then storms out the door. You wonder when your wife lost her mind and if she'll ever get it back. Panic sets in.

Scenario #3:

Your 1-year-old falls and hits her head... a lot. You're certain this is causing irreparable damage to her developing brain. Panic sets in.

Scenario #4:

Your baby is sleeping soundly, too soundly. "Is he breathing?" you wonder. You give him a not-so-subtle shove.

The preceding scenarios will undoubtedly crop up within the first year of fatherhood, and your responses will be similar. Regardless of your temperament or disposition, the first year of fatherhood is one of the most stressful of your life. Reason and logic give way to paranoia and neurosis. The stablest relationships may become strained. Sleep deprivation becomes more than just another psychological experiment. Rest assured, though, that these situations will be remedied with time and patience.
